Zoetrope
I don’t know when it started, but for the larger part of modern history the whole of society has been holding its collective breath; waiting for the future. We’re so preoccupied with what might one day exist that we have a tendency to completely overlook what already is. The flying car may not be practical or relevant to our day to day needs, but this is the future. We’re living it. Right now.
Today, unborn infants can receive life saving surgery in the womb. A child in Illinois can have a best friend in Dublin and talk to them daily with video. Any substantial piece of news will travel the world in less than an hour. We carry more advanced technology in our hip pocket than even existed the year we were born. Our televisions show images that look more crisp and real than reality. We live complex lives on the internet that are little more than an amusing diversion from our real, honest, daily routine. Many of us have jobs in fields that didn’t exist when our parents were our age.
This is the future. It’s happening now and its changing faster than you can imagine. Tomorrow will be so vastly different from today that this what we have now will seem ancient in just five years. Stop looking for the future. Take a deep breath. It will get here whether you’re anticipating it or not. Enjoy today. It will be gone soon.
